PhD Position in Pharmacology and Toxicology

Misuse of highly potent opioids such as fentanyl and its derivatives (e.g. carfentanyl) became an increasing risk for individuals and public health in recent years. In fact, in 2019-20 more than 500,000 individuals died from opioid overdose in the USA alone. Despite this dramatically increasing health risk, no effective therapy is available.
The candidate assigned to this position will have the unique opportunity to evaluate and analyze newly generated antibodies raised against fentanyl or its derivatives with regard to their ability to neutralize opioid binding to their receptors in vitro. Further, the candidate will analyze signaling pathways induced by opioids in various cell lines endogenously expressing opioid receptors.
The position will be located at the LMU Munich and is part of a close interdisciplinary cooperation between the Bundeswehr Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (Munich), the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ, Heidelberg) and the Walther Straub Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology (Munich).
